A delegation from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) led by the Project Manager, Mr. Aron Tekelegzi has donated a set of furniture, computers and accessories, as well as stationery to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to assist in establishing a Migration Rights Desk intended, among others, to integrate migration issues into the operations of CHRAJ, and also ensure reporting on migration issues from a human rights perspective.
Mr. Tekelegzi stated that the support was to recognize the importance of integrating human rights into the national reporting system as far as migration issues were concerned.
Receiving the items, the Commissioner of CHRAJ, Mr Joseph Whittal recalled that during the Commission’s maiden interaction with IOM, it was observed that there was the need for CHRAJ to pay more attention to issues on migration. He indicated that, as the National Human Rights Institution, its human rights work intersected with issues relating to migration and, therefore, making the role of CHRAJ within the migration discourse very crucial. Commissioner Whittal expressed his appreciation to IOM for the kind gesture.
The IOM’s Senior Resources Management Officer, Mr David Shokry, on his part, observed that the establishment of an IOM Migration Rights Desk in CHRAJ reflected the extent of partnership between the CHRAJ and IOM. He was hopeful, that the migration desk would be extremely useful to the work of CHRAJ as it would deepen the collaborative efforts between CHRAJ, the various governmental agencies, civil society organizations, and the IOM. He alluded, that the donation to the CHRAJ was a symbolic gesture which would open further opportunities and strengthen working relations between CHRAJ and IOM.
The Director of Human Rights of CHRAJ, Mrs. Mary Nartey who welcomed the delegation expressed excitement about the donation, and acknowledged the timely intervention of IOM.
