Human Rights Mandate
CHRAJ has a broad mandate to protect universal human rights and freedoms, especially those vested in the 1992 Constitution, including civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. This mandate is defined in Article 218 (a), (c), and (f) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 7 (1) (a) (c) and (g) of the CHRAJ Act.
Promotion & Prevention
The Commission advances respect for human rights in Ghana through:
- Public Education: TV, radio, newspapers, newsletters, workshops, conferences, lectures, and outreach programs.
- Research & Monitoring: Conducting research on human rights practices and monitoring compliance with national and international human rights obligations.
Protection & Enforcement
The Commission:
- Investigates human rights violations using mediation, negotiation, and formal hearings.
- Conducts special investigations into systemic or cultural human rights abuses.
- Holds institutions accountable for violations.
Powers of the Commission
- Require institutions or individuals to submit information for investigations.
- Summon individuals or institutions for inquiries.
- Seek court remedies for compliance.

When May I Complain?
You may complain when:
- Your human rights have been violated.
- You are denied access to a right.
Complaints must be filed within 12 months of the violation.

Any individual, group, or institution can file a complaint. In some cases, complaints can be made on behalf of another person.
